There were a variety of weapons used in the Great War. Some of them were new while others had been used for many years before.
Machine Guns
Machine guns were new to militaries all over the world. They were useful, but they also had their flaws. For example, 4-6 people were neeeded in order to carry one. They also overheated quickly. Machine guns made it hard for enemies to avoid due to the mass amount of bullets being shot at once.
Flame Thrower
The flame thrower dates back to the 5th century BC. It used compressed air because oxygen and nitrogen would cause explosions. Although it was great for scaring the enemy, it only would work for 40 minutes at a time.

Hand Guns
Hand guns were the easiest weapon to carry around due to their small size and releatively lightweight structure. The Germans produced over 2 million pistols for WWI alone. Unfortunately, they didn't shoot far.
Rifles
There were so many rifle models made during WWI. So many that people stopped trying to distinguish among them. The French Lebel fired smokeless cartidges which was something very new and very useful.

Tanks
Tanks, weighing at 15 tons, were a new invention in the Great War. They were mobile canons that allowed a soilder to go inside in order to fire at enemies. Tanks put an end to the use of trenches because using a tank, one could easily move across a trench easily. These machines were strong, but they did have issues. Because of poor ventillation, they had to be cleaned often. The tracks would often fall off of the tanks, and they could only move at about 3 MPH.
